TALLADEGA, AL (April 26) – Chevrolet dominated Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway!
Impalas driven by Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray and Juan Montoya finished 1-3. Then, with Mark Martin finishing fifth and Clint Bowyer running seventh, three positions ahead of Mike Bliss, Chevrolet put six Impalas in the top 10.
Harvick took the inside line past McMurray during the third and final green-white-checker restart and beating the 2010 Daytona 500 champion under the checkered flag by .011 seconds.
The ultra-competitive race set NASCAR Sprint Cup records for the number of leaders (29) and lead changes (88). The race, extended 12 laps beyond its scheduled distance of 188 laps, was the first victory for Richard Childress Racing since Jeff Burton won at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 11, 2008.
“It really played out perfect for us today,” said Harvick, who won his 12th Cup Series race, his first at Talladega. “We planned to ride around in the back, wait ’til 50 laps to go and really push forward after that.”
Impalas have won six of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ first nine races in 2010.
Harvick’s first victory in 115 races pushed him into second place in the Sprint Cup standings, just 26 points behind fellow Impala driver Jimmie Johnson. Martin, who drives the #5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, improved four positions to sixth. Impala drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon rank eighth and 10th, respectively.
