Originally known as Jackson-Olinger Chevrolet upon opening in September of 1925, the original owners of what is today Jupiter Chevrolet were Ben C. Jackson and Ray Olinger. Mr. Jackson and Mr. Bolinger became friends when they both sold Fords. When General Motors started and began manufacturing Chevrolets, they thought it looked like a good product and decided to join forces and purchase the franchise.
In 1958 the business was moved from the square further out on Garland Road to an area, which became known as the “Money Saving Mile” because of all the dealerships located there. The company remained at the Garland Road location until the fall of 1997 when it moved to it’s present location, 11611 LBJ Freeway at Jupiter Road.
Karen Newman Matetich recalls that the past new cars couldn’t be shown until the national show date. They would come in covered up on transports and the showroom windows would be painted over. The cars were so well hidden that there was much anticipation and excitement as to what they would look like. Since only two models were made each year, a two-door coupe or a four-door sedan, the body style changed each year.
On show day, the dealership would stay open late as people anxiously awaited the new car debut. “It was like a party,” she recalls. Small gifts of perfume and model cars would be given away. One year, they even brought in elephants and Karen was among the first to ride them.
Michael Matetich Jr. joined the family business in 1994. After completing the NADA Dealer Academy, he has worked in several departments at Jupiter Chevrolet and is now the General Manager-making him a fourth generation car guy.
