When it was introduced at the North American International auto Show in Detroit in January, the 2009 Corvette ZR1′s power was estimated at 100 horsepower for each of its 6.2 litres of displacement.
GM Powertrain has completed SAE certification of the ZR1′s supercharged LS9 V8 and the results exceed the estimate — 638 hp and 604 pound-feet of torque.
The LS9′s output is nearly 103 hp per litre. General Motors says it is “unquestionably the most powerful automotive production engine ever manufactured” by the automaker.
“One of the most amazing things about the Corvette ZR1 is the level of refinement that our designers and engineers have attained,” says Ed Peper, Chevrolet’s general manager. “Even with all that power, this car has road manners that will allow our customers to enjoy it on the streets as a daily driver and on the track.”

Dave Ressler’s love of Corvettes is exceeded only by the depth of his pockets, and has paid $1 million for the very first ZR1, which has rolled off an assemby line into his driveway. Ressler, who’s been selling Chevys for 20 years, bought the car earlier this year at the big Barrett-Jackson auction and picked it up last week. GM donated the $1 million to the United Way. After their last quarter loss of $15+ billion United Way better cash the check quickly!
Ressler’s Corette ZR1 comes with a custom VIN plate (No. 0001) and one-of-a-kind paint job in LeMans Blue. He also got to tour the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Ky where he drove his new toy off the assembly line. Although the ZR1 produces 638 horsepower and can circle the Nurburgring in an astonishing 7:26.4, Ressler won’t be flogging it. It’s headed back to Bozeman, Mont. to join the other 45 ‘Vettes in his collection. Which, by the way, includes the first ‘53 Corvette GM ever sold.
Ressler Loves his Vettes!

From Motortrend
We knew the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 was likely going to be priced right around 100 grand when it finally hit the showroom floor, and GM hit the target.
The ZR1′s base MSRP of $103,300 (including an $850 destination charge) moves the $105,000 number thanks to a $1700 gas guzzler tax, but we’re guessing no one lining up to buy the fastest and most technically advanced production Corvette of all time will mind in the least.
Chevrolet also released several performance numbers for the ZR1, and they’re jaw-dropping:* 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds
* 0-100 mph in 7.0 seconds
* Quarter-mile elapsed time of 11.3 seconds at 131 mph
* 205 mph top speed
The ZR1′s claimed 0-60 time is .3-ticks quicker than the Z06 and its 0-100 mph of seven seconds is almost a full second faster than the Z06′s 7.9 seconds. It goes without saying that the ZR1, which is reportedly capable of a 205 mph top speed, is the equal of some of the world’s greatest supercars, at a price point that’s much, much lower than the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the world.
As for the ZR1′s equipment list, the car comes with similar packaging to that of the Z06, but an upgraded option package is available that will set you back an additional $10,000. Here’s the partial list of what you get for the extra scratch: power-adjustable, heated and leather-trimmed sport seats with an embroidered ZR1 logo; side air bags; Bose audio system and navigation system; Bluetooth connectivity; power telescoping steering column, and a custom leather-wrapped interior available in four colors. Chrome wheels ($2000) are the only other available option available for the ZR1. Add all the options in and you’re looking at $117,000, before dealer markup, of course.
Not that fuel economy really matters for a car in this stratosphere, but the EPA has also officially rated the car at 14 mpg city / 20 highway, which despite the gas guzzler tax, are pretty impressive numbers considering the ZR1′s supercharged, 6.2-liter LS9 engine that pumps out an SAE-certified 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque lurking under the car’s carbon fiber hood. It isn’t quite the most fuel efficient vehicle in its stratosphere, but it’s close.
Below is all you need to know about the LS9 engine:
* Aluminum cylinder block with iron cylinder liners that are finish-bored and honed with a deck plate installed
* Forged steel crankshaft with a nine-bolt flange
* Titanium connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons
* Stronger, cylinder heads with 2.16-inch (55 mm) titanium intake valves and 1.59-inch (40.4 mm) hollow-stem, sodium-filled exhaust valves
* Camshaft with 0.555-inch (14.1 mm) lift for excellent idle and low-speed driving qualities
* A dry-sump oiling system with 10.5-quart (9.9 liters) capacity
* Integrated oil cooler and piston-cooling oil squirters
* Intercooler cover visible through the hood window that features ZR1-unique blue accents and “LS9 SUPERCHARGED” embossed on the left and right sides
As soon as we get our hands on a production ZR1, you can be assured we will test it to its limits to see if we can match or beat GM’s numbers. One thing’s for certain, the ZR1 hasn’t even hit the streets yet and it’s already arguably one of the most amazing production cars the world has to offer.

Chevrolet officially announced the 2009 Corvette ZR1 – an American supercar that brings the technology and engineering refinement of carbon-fiber, ceramics and electronics together in a distinctive design.
“Chevrolet’s goal with the new ZR1 is to show what an American supercar can deliver, at a price that trumps exotics that cost two, three or four times as much – and does so with exceptional driveability,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager.
The ZR1′s basic stats:
All-new LS9 supercharged 6.2L V-8 targeted at producing at least 100 horsepower per liter, or 620 horsepower (462 kW), and approximately 595 lb.-ft. of torque (823 Nm)
4/25/2008: The supercharged 6.2-liter V8 in the forthcoming Chevy Corvette ZR1 cranks out 638 horsepower, 604 ft-lb torque. Top speed 205 mph.
Six-speed, close-ratio, race-hardened manual transmission
New, high-capacity dual-disc clutch
Higher-capacity and specific-diameter axle half-shafts; enhanced torque tube
Specific suspension tuning provides more than 1g cornering grip
Twenty-spoke 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels
Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires – P285/30ZR19 in front and P335/25ZR20 in the rear – developed specifically for the ZR1
Standard carbon-ceramic, drilled disc brake rotors – 15.5-inch-diameter (394-mm) in the front and 15-inch-diameter (380-mm) in the rear
Larger brake calipers with substantially increased pad area
Standard Magnetic Selective Ride Control with track-level suspension
Wider, carbon-fiber front fenders with ZR1-specific dual vents
Carbon-fiber hood with a raised, polycarbonate window – offering a view of the intercooler below it
Carbon-fiber roof panel, roof bow, front fascia splitter and rocker moldings with clear-coated, exposed carbon-fiber weave
ZR1-specific full-width rear spoiler with raised outboard sections
Specific gauge cluster with boost gauge (also displayed on the head-up display) and 220-mph (370 km/h) speedometer readout
Only two options: chrome wheels and a “luxury” package
Curb weight of approximately 3,350 pounds (1,519 kg)
“Chevrolet’s goal with the new ZR1 is to show what an American supercar can deliver, at a price that trumps exotics that cost two, three or four times as much – and does so with exceptional driveability,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager.

After driving the 2008 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Corvette around the brick yard, Emo got bitten by the Corvette bug!
Yahoo’s UK sport site, “Eurosport” recently caught up with Fittipaldi and did a 60 second interview where they asked him questions like what’s your favorite food, favorite movie and other such bio info!
The question that got a surprise was about his driving habbits.
Eurosport writer Jonathan Symcox asked him, “What car do you drive?”
Fittapaldi answered, “Always a Mercedes. But I’ve just ordered the fastest car in the world. It’s amazing, the new Corvette. It costs over 100,000 dollars. It has amazing handling, amazing speed – they have made a car that would beat any Ferrari, any Lamborghini in the world. Test drive it in the future, and remember what I told you.”
Coming from a multiple time winner of the Indy 500, the Formula One World Championship, and too many other accomplishments to list here, that’s a pretty impressive endorsement!

But Mr. McCollum, who owns an oil-field service company, made an exception for the special “427 Stinger” Z06 Corvette he recently bought.
The car is a gorgeous shade of red with a black stripe down the center of the hood that’s reminiscent of the ’67 427 Corvette, which was intentional, of course.
Only 500 of the Z06s will be sold worldwide at $80,000 or so a pop.
Mr. McCollum, 55, who lives halfway between Denton and Decatur, thinks his car is the first 505-horsepower 427 in the area.
“There was one that arrived before mine, but it got wrecked after they took it off the truck,” he said.

General Motors, Chevrolet and the Corvette team are clearly proud of the power ratings they just announced for the Corvette ZR1. With its LS9 V8 producing 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque, you would expect the most powerful Corvette ever to be the fastest as well. And you’d be right. On its GMNext website, GM has revealed that its taken the ZR1 all the way up to 205 mph at its test track in Papenburg, Germany. And they had a video camera on board to capture the moment. The sense of speed is incredible, and even we got excited when the ZR1 climbed the banked oval and made other vehicles track testing that day look like stationary objects. Keep your eye on the digital speedometer in the bottom center of the video and watch as the ZR1 is still pulling strongly above 180 mph.
We remember a time when the Ferrari F40 and Lamborghini Diablo were battling for the title of World’s Fastest Production Car, and the Diablo narrowly beat out the F40 by claiming a top speed of 204 mph. Now we have a Chevy that can go 205 mph. What a wonderful world.
