Thieves Drilling for Gas in Your Driveway? Drill & Drain Vandals

Auto repair shops are reporting a spike in gas tank replacements due to punctured or drilled tanks. In the old days all you needed to discourage a thief from stealing your gas was a locking gas cap. Metal gas tanks can be drilled, but newer cars and trucks that have plastic or composite fuel tanks are an easier mark. SUV’s and pick up trucks are high enough off the pavement for any low life to crawl under with a cordless drill and a gas can. There has recently been a spike in fuel tank replacements at auto repair shops across the nation for this very reason. Sam at a local Tampa car dealership stated “Thieves are trading in their siphoning hoses for cordless drills”. After talking to one unlucky 2002 Chevy Avalanche owner that had their gas tank drilled and gas stolen, I learned that there is a national back-order on the plastic fuel tank that fits their truck. The same part number fits many other GM trucks and SUV’s as well. Insurance companies could be feeling the crunch for these repairs, but if the deductible is around $500 it may not be worth making a claim. You may be asking ”how to prevent fuel tanks from being drilled and gas stolen”.

There are several common sense things anyone can do to reduce the chance of having their fuel tank drilled and their liquid gold pirated. Park in well lit areas, clean out the garage and park inside when possible, park near store entrances where more people are present. And finally buy a bumper sticker that says ”Gas Tank Near Empty” and hope that any would be gas thieves in your vicinity can read. Kidding aside, if you have had your gas stolen by a drill and drain vandal or can offer preventive measures we would love to hear your comments.

Man Arrested After Pumping Gas Into Imaginary Car

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Frankfort man was arrested on drug trafficking charges early Sunday morning after he was reportedly pumping gas into an imaginary vehicle. According to the arrest report, Metro Police arrived at a gas station at First and Jefferson streets in Louisville and immediately smelled marijuana coming from Joshua L. Moore, who station clerks contend was filling up an imaginary vehicle.

Officers searched Moore and found “two large baggies” of marijuana and a large amount of Ecstasy. Police said Moore also had a cell phone and a large amount of money, which they said was indicative of trafficking.

Police said that more narcotics were located on Moore when he was being booked into Metro Corrections.

Buy a car, get a free gun at Missouri car dealer

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) – A Missouri car dealer said on Thursday sales have soared at his auto and truck business since launching a promotion this week that promises buyers a free handgun or a $250 gas card with every purchase.

Max Motors, a small Butler, Missouri dealership that has as its logo a grimacing cowboy wielding a pistol, has sold more than 30 cars and trucks in the last three days, far more than its normal volume. And owner Mark Muller credits his decision to start offering buyers their choice of a $250 gas card or a $250 credit at a gun shop.

Muller said the promotion was inspired by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who is vying with Hillary Clinton to be the Democratic nominee for the presidential election in November. ”We did it because of Barack Obama. He said all those people in the Midwest, you’ve got to have compassion for them because they’re clinging to their guns and their Bibles. I found that quite offensive.”

“We all go to church on Sunday and we all carry guns,” said Muller. “I’ve got a gun in my pocket right now. I have a rifle in my truck. We’ve got to shoot the coyotes out here, they’re attacking our cows, our chickens. We’re not clinging to nothing. We’re just damn glad to live in a free country where you can have a gun if you want. This is the way it ought to be.”

$11 million: Ferrari nets record price

1961 Ferrari convertible sells for the highest recorded price ever paid at a car at auction.

A 1961 Ferrari California Spyder sold for $10,894,900 at an auction in Maranello, Italy, Saturday. It was the highest price ever paid for a vintage car at auction, according to RM Auctions and Sotheby’s, the companies that organized the sale.

The previous record was set in 1990 when Sotheby’s sold a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO in Monaco for $10,756,000.

But that was a race car, not a convertible designed for driving on the street, pointed out McKeel Hagerty, president of Hagerty Insurance, a company that insures high-value collectible cars in Europe and North America.

Ferrari race cars have traditionally sold for much higher figures than the company’s street cars, Hagerty said.

“Ferrari 250 GTO’s are now selling privately for twice that,” he said

Prior to the auction, RM Auctions itself had estimated the value of the 1961 California Spyder at less than half of what it ultimately sold for. The car was one of 56 ever built, according to RM.

The high price paid for this car shows strong demand for vintage Ferraris in Europe, Hagerty said. In recent months, Ferraris have been selling privately between collectors for amounts far exceeding $11 million, he said, but noted again that those have mainly been race cars.

Sporting Events Tickets-Big Discounts

The record-breaking black convertible had been owned by gravel-voiced tough-guy actor James Coburn. He bought the car in 1964, according to RM Auctions, shortly after completing “The Great Escape.” It is not clear when Coburn sold the car. The actor died in 2002. The car was purchased by British television and radio personality Chris Evans.

“I think it just shows that there’s strong demand,” Hagerty said, “because you don’t get to that type of number without strong demand.”

Do people with red cars really get more speeding tickets than those with blue cars? Do car insurance companies use the color of your car to determine your rates? Do certain colors increase your chance of an accident? What does the color of your car SAY about your personality?

How Fast IS that Red Car?

According to the web site Colormatters.com there may be some truth to the urban legends surrounding car color and speeding tickets…at least anecdotally.

Visitors to that site say when they drive red cars they seem to get more speeding tickets. Although there seems to be no official statistics kept for such things, and the police aren’t talking about it, the stories reinforce the urban legend that many have heard.

In general, driving the speed limit is always a good idea no matter what color car you drive. If you keep your red car at or near the limit, the chances you will get a ticket are much smaller. In fact, they are probably exactly the same as the guy next to you driving the speed limit in his purple car.

Color and Personality

In Great Britain there was actually some research done that suggested the color of your car says something about your personality type. And accordingly, based on your personality type, your likeliness to be involved in an accident (in the U.K. at least). The research shows that black cars are twice as likely to be involved in crashes as cream-colored cars. Whether this is true in the United States is unclear.

Just for fun, here is what the research implied about certain car colors (listed in order of most dangerous to least)

Black cars denote an aggressive personality or someone who’s an outsider or rebel.

Silver cars indicate someone who’s cool, calm and slightly aloof.

Green cars can often be chosen by people with hysterical tendencies.

Yellow cars signify someone who is idealistic and novelty loving.

Blue cars are chosen by the more introspective, reflective and cautious driver.

Gray cars represent those who are calm, sober and dedicated to their work.

Red cars denote those who are full of zest, energy and drive, who think, move and talk quickly.

Pink cars are chosen by gentle, loving and affectionate drivers.

White cars represent status-seeking extrovert drivers.

Cream cars are the least likely to be involved in accidents and denote self-contained and controlled owners.

The Color of Money

What about the car insurance rates question? Does your car insurance company use color to determine your premium? The answer is…no.

Some people have suggested that insurers use the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to determine the car color and use that information, in part, to set the rate for each car. But the fact is car color is not one of the details encoded into a VIN number. So technically, unless they ASK you the color of your car when you buy your car insurance policy, they really have no idea what color it is. And thus has no affect on your rate.

Additionally, according to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times in 2005, despite the mistaken belief by 25% of drivers that color affects your car insurance rates, it really has no effect on your insurance at all. Factors like year, make, model, body type (of the car, not YOU), and engine size are taken into consideration along with the driver’s personal information.

So, if you want that little red sports car, go right ahead and get it. Does it mean you are full of zest, energy and drive and think, move and talk quickly? Only you can answer that.

The fact is, if you keep the speed of that little red number somewhere around the posted limit, stop at red lights, yield to oncoming traffic, and make your cell phone calls when you are stopped, you will probably do a lot more for your car insurance rates than any color ever could.

Man arrested after trying to fill up imaginary car

A man has been arrested at a Kentucky petrol station after he was reported to be trying to pump fuel into an imaginary car.

According to reports, Louisville police found Joshua L. Moore at the petrol station, where workers alleged he had been trying to pump petrol into a car that wasn’t there, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The officers immediately noted what appeared to be a strong smell of marijuana.

After being arrested, Moore was found to have ‘two large baggies’ of marijuana on his person, as well as an impressive amount of ecstasy.

According to authorities, he also had a mobile phone and a large amount of money, which they take as evidence that he was involved in trafficking the drugs.

25-year-old Moore was charged with three counts of drug trafficking. Reports do not indicate whether his imaginary car was impounded.

William Howard Taft

Taft was not only the fattest President of the United States; in 1909 he became the first one to ride in an official presidential limousine. In fact there were four official presidential limos: a White Steamer, a Baker Electric, and two Pierce-Arrows. From this selection, it’s obvious that Taft was an early proponent of no-fossil fuel vehicles (more than many subsequent occupants of the White House).

William McKinley

In 1899, McKinley was actually the first president to take a ride in a car, a steam-powered Locomobile.

Warren Harding

Harding was the first president who knew how to drive a car before taking office. He was also the first president to ride to his inauguration in a limo.

Calvin Coolidge

Typical of Calvin Coolidge’s reputed stingy demeanor, he rented his presidential limousines to save money.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

Roosevelt’s official presidential limo was a Ford equipped with hand controls because he enjoyed driving despite his polio affliction. He only stopped driving himself after experiencing a 1933 assassination attempt in Chicago. From then on, his limousines were armor-plated.

An additional note: on December 8, 1941, one day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt rode to Congress to deliver his declaration of war in gangster Al Capone’s armor-plated limo. The car was then owned by the Department of Treasury following Capone’s tax evasion conviction.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Eisenhower was the first president to have a Plexiglass bubble installed on the roof of his limousine in order to be seen by crowds even in bad weather.

John F. Kennedy

A sign of his times, JFK’s Lincoln Continental was tricked-out and gadget-laden much like a James Bond vehicle. It had removable roof panels that could be configured in various ways, and the back seat could be raised more than 10 inches. The car also came with a two-way radio and a telephone.

It was leased to the White House for a mere $500.

Lyndon Johnson

After Kennedy’s assassination, Lyndon Johnson had the presidential Lincoln overhauled, adding 1600 pounds of steel plating and bullet-proof glass, and a non-removable top.
