2008 Chevrolet Cobalt XFE beats Honda Civic in terms of mpg

GM has just started sellling its 2008 Chevy Cobalt XFE compact with a class-leading highway fuel economy rating. With its 36mpg in the highway cycle, the XFE comes neck to neck or even beats such competitors as Honda Civic Coupe (34-36 mpg), Ford Focus (35 mpg) and (35 mpg). It delivers nice 25 mpg in the city cycle.

Available as an LS and 1LT coupe and sedan models with the manual transmission, the got its winning EPA score with the help of revised engine calibration, low rolling-resistance tires, a new, 3.74:1 final drive ratio and this sort of stuff. Combined, all these techniques helped increase the mpg ratio by about 9 percent of the previous model.

The cars come equipped with such standard equipment as head curtain side-impact air bags, air conditioning, XM satellite radio, AM/FM radio with CD and MP3 playback, rear defogger and center console with two power outlets.

Working on the regular unleaded fuel, its 2.2-liter DOHC inline-4 Ecotec engine delivers 148 hp @ 5600 rpm and 152 lb-ft (206 Nm) @ 4200 of torque.

With the price of crude oil hovering around $100 per barrel, auto analysts are once again questioning the continued existence of the large sport/utility. And why not? These big rigs, some of which can haul nine passengers and tow 10,000 pounds, tout large-displacement V-8s and three-ton curb weights. While that can equate to a full load of family, friends, and gear, as well as a fishing boat in the rearview, it also means fuel economy in the low-teens and fill-ups that exceed $80. No wonder minivans are alive and crossovers are kicking.

Cobalt Posts Biggest Sales Gain in U.S. Is This a Recession or What?

Car sales can be a fickle weather vane for the U.S. economy and even G.M. chairman Rick Wagoner reported yesterday that things weren’t as bad as “many doomsday people are thinking.” Still , vehicle sales dropped by 10 percent in one month. Only Honda saw a tiny a gain in the number of vehicles it moved.Perhaps a better indicator of the country’s economic mood is how tastes in vehicles are shifting. With oil hitting a record high yesterday of $102.45 a barrel, it’s no surprise that the Chevrolet Silverado saw its sales drop by 27.9% from the previous year. Likewise the Dodge Ram took it on the nose with a decline of 24%. Ford’s F Series trucks held up a little better, falling only by about 9%.

Not surprisingly, the winners in these days of home foreclosures and $50 fill-ups are compacts and subcompacts. But what do you make of this: The sales gain leader for this year is the sexy and exciting Chevrolet Cobalt, which jumped nearly 50%. The biggest loser? Toyota’s Corolla fell by 28.1%. Recession or not? Perhaps we should wait until the primaries are over before we decide.
